Golden Milk- Remedy for Sleep

Golden milk is an Ayurvedic drink to aid sleep. The pepper is an important part of this drink because it promotes the absorption of the turmeric. Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. I have adapted the recipe slightly from Candice Oksenhorn of Swan Sage.

Ingredients

  •  2 cups of non- dairy milk of choice
  • 1 tsp. Turmeric
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. maple syrup
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Tiny piece of fresh peeled ginger root or ¼ tsp. ginger powder

Instructions

  1. First blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth.
  2.  Pour into a small saucepan and heat for 3-5 minutes over medium heat until hot but not boiling.
  3.  Drink immediately

Candice is my meditation teacher and I always love learning from her.  She is a certified Perfect Health and Primordial Sound Mediation Teacher from the Chopra Center.  I attended a presentation at the Maroon Creek Club last week on sleep from an Ayurvedic perspective.  Along with enjoying the golden milk before bedtime, there are three other things that Candice recommends to promote good sleep.

  • Eat an earlier and lighter dinner.  Eat dinner by 6:00pm.  Consider soup or a salad.
  • Disengage from screen time
  • Establish a blissful nighttime routine:
  • Dim lights, cohesive time with loved ones, or nourishing time for yourself, lights out and in bed by 10:00pm.
